IBM S&S renewal on Dec 31, 2026? Three months is still enough time to downsize and save.

Why the renewal conversation usually starts too late, what IBM will ask for, and how the right validation keeps a data request from turning into a full-blown audit.

If your IBM Subscription & Support (S&S) renews on December 31, 2026, the clock is ticking. You may already have IBM's quote in hand. The good news: it is not too late to act. There is still time to right-size your S&S, reduce products you no longer use, and save real money on the upcoming renewal.

Why downsizing S&S is harder than it sounds

IBM will not simply take your word that a product or metric has dropped. To reduce capacity-based licenses like PVU or VPC, IBM typically requires audit snapshot reports from your ILMT or Flexera environment. For metrics that those tools cannot measure, IBM asks for data collection workbooks.

Either route exposes more than you intend. A snapshot or workbook meant to justify a reduction can also reveal broader deployment data — data IBM can use to open a full publisher audit if something looks off.

The hidden cost of bad tool data

Most ILMT and Flexera reports contain errors. Stale inventory, missed bundling, misassigned products, and VM Manager problems can all inflate the number IBM sees. A single VM Manager error on one host can misread the PVU-per-core factor and represent thousands of dollars in consumption that does not really exist.

If you submit those reports as-is, you are not just overpaying. You are handing IBM a reason to ask more questions. A simple data request can escalate into a full audit quickly when the numbers do not reconcile.

How MooseTech helps before the renewal

We review ILMT and Flexera reports end to end before they are shared. We look for the errors that trigger follow-up questions — inflated PVUs, misclassified products, orphaned agents, and unhealthy scans. Then we reconfigure the data so the reports reflect what you actually consume, not what the tool happens to output.

We also make sure the data collection workbooks stay focused on the reduction. App owners are often asked to provide extra detail "just in case." We help keep that detail from slipping out, because unnecessary disclosure is how a targeted request becomes a broad audit.

What you should do now

  • Get your ILMT and Flexera snapshots reviewed now, not in December. Corrections take time.
  • Identify products and metrics that can be reduced with evidence you can defend.
  • Treat every workbook and snapshot as a potential audit exhibit — because to IBM, it is.
  • Bring in an independent advisor who sits on your side of the table and knows where IBM's questions usually lead.

Now is the time to act

A Dec 31 renewal does not feel urgent in September. But the work to validate, correct, and right-size your data takes longer than most teams expect. Starting now gives you leverage. Starting in November usually means accepting IBM's quote.
