IBM's Client Value Acceleration (CVA) program promises a simpler view of your software estate and reassurance around audits. For a busy procurement or SAM team, that is an appealing proposition. But greater visibility for IBM is not necessarily greater protection for you.
Before committing to CVA, look beyond the portal and the headline benefits. Who represents your interests? Who receives your deployment data? What will the service cost over time? And which compliance responsibilities remain with your team? If you are already enrolled, those questions matter just as much.
Your advisor should be on your side of the table
Some CVA providers also carry out software audits for IBM. That dual role deserves scrutiny. When a licensing interpretation is disputed, you need an advisor prepared to challenge the publisher's position, not simply relay it.
Ask how the provider manages its relationship with IBM, handles conflicts of interest, and supports challenges to its findings. A credible compliance assessment should stand on your contractual rights and validated deployment evidence. Participation in CVA is not a reason to accept a conclusion without questioning it.
Audit reassurance comes with a data question
An IBM-hosted portal can give IBM direct access to information about your software deployments. Before sharing that information, establish what is collected, who can see it, how long it is retained, and what it can be used for. Data shared for advisory work should not be treated as a routine administrative detail.
Any promise of audit exemption should be checked against the written agreement: its scope, conditions, duration, and exclusions. An exemption is not a blanket acceptance of your licensing position. Understand what protection you actually receive in exchange for the visibility you provide.
The real price is not the introductory price
A subsidized first year can make CVA look inexpensive. The economics may change when that support ends. Compare the cost over the full term, including services your team must still deliver and tools you must still maintain.
- Ongoing fees: What happens to the price after the introductory period?
- Service boundaries: Which activities are included, and which cost extra?
- Commitment and exit: What are the renewal provisions, notice requirements, and potential termination charges?
- Retained costs: Which reporting tools and internal tasks will you continue paying for?
A new portal does not remove your reporting obligations
Do not assume CVA replaces ILMT or FlexeraOne for sub-capacity reporting. The requirements depend on your agreement and environment. Agents, reporting infrastructure, virtualization integrations, and report validation may still need to be maintained.
Unhealthy scans, stale inventory, incorrect product assignments, and VM Manager errors do not disappear because the results appear in a different portal. They still need to be corrected so your reported consumption reflects what is actually running, not what a tool incorrectly counts.
Already in CVA? MooseTech can help you plan an exit
Being enrolled does not mean you should renew automatically. MooseTech Consulting can help you assess your options and work toward an orderly exit from CVA, with a plan that addresses your agreement, reporting continuity, and control of your data.
- Review the commitment. We help examine your CVA and provider agreements, renewal dates, notice provisions, and potential exit costs, alongside your procurement and legal teams.
- Validate your licensing position. We review entitlements, deployments, and compliance findings so decisions about leaving are based on defensible evidence rather than untested assumptions.
- Plan the transition. We help identify the reports, records, and tool access you need to retain, and establish how ILMT or FlexeraOne reporting will continue without gaps.
- Address data access. We help you identify what has been shared and seek written clarity on access removal, retention, and deletion where your agreement permits. Leaving does not automatically erase information already disclosed.
- Support the exit discussion. We work alongside your team on non-renewal or termination discussions and the move to independent, client-side advisory support.
The available route and timing depend on your contract. We do not assume immediate cancellation, a fee-free exit, or continued audit protection after departure. The goal is a controlled transition that preserves the records and reporting you need while putting your interests first.
Independent advice. Your interests first.
MooseTech Consulting works for you, not IBM. We validate the evidence, challenge unsupported licensing conclusions, and help you make deliberate decisions about what to share, what to renew, and which services genuinely add value.
Whether you are weighing a CVA proposal or looking for a way out of an existing arrangement, talk to MooseTech Consulting before your next commitment. Audit reassurance should not come at the expense of independent advice or control of your IBM estate.
